Eben Haines, Facades, James and Audrey Foster Prize, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA, 2021

Eben Haines was born in Boston, MA in 1990, and he received his BFA with honors from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2013. Haines was a recipient of the 2018 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in Drawing, as well as the 2021 James and Audrey Foster Prize from the ICA Boston, and the Public Art Accelerator Program with the Boston Public Art Triennial in 2023. He and his wife Delaney Dameron received a 2020 Transformative Public Arts Grant from the city of Boston to help continue their work with Shelter In Place Gallery, a miniature art gallery project they opened during the COVID 19 Pandemic to show artists' work online while the city was in lockdown. Haines lives and works in Boston, MA.

Haines creates spaces that feel uncanny and out of place, allowing viewers a chance to stop and investigate their own positions within our various systems, and engage in more empathetic and community focused ways of seeing the world. Using common New England architectural forms as a basis for sculptures, paintings and installations he encapsulates the constructed nature of history and its biases, using the physical nature of shelter to represent the asymmetrical systems of protection built into our society. Weathering objects creates a temporal separation, inviting the viewer to look back at our era as if from a distant and clear-eyed future, where collective action has already solved our biggest problems. Lately, flood imagery has pervaded the work, both alluding to the literal flood waters that will disproportionately endanger Boston's affordable housing stock, but also symbolically engendering the fascist violence that is flooding governments to steal away the rights of our most vulnerable populations. Candles and comets enter scenes frequently to imply that time is running out, leading inevitably to some massive societal shift on the horizon. How do we protect our neighbors in the interim?
