Rivalry Projects is excited to present Signs of Autumn, a solo exhibition of new works by Buffalo-based artist Nando Alvarez-Perez. The presentation, Alvarez-Perez’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, will open to the public on Friday, September 1 and will be on view through October 20, 2023. Join us for an Opening Reception on First Friday, September 1, 2023 from 5:00-9:00 PM.
Produced largely while in residence at Light Work in the summer of 2022, the works in the exhibition offer a complex meditation on America’s transition from an industrial to a financialized economy and its effect on the instability of our current social, political, and economic moment. The photographs capture objects found in thrift stores or on the street, books that informed his thinking about the work, movies and other recognizable cultural detritus, and documentation of Alvarez-Perez’s everyday. They exist as assemblage, as riddle-filled mind maps on America’s evolution, and how this shift has appeared in art, politics, and material culture, and, moreover, how it has appeared locally in Buffalo, New York, a city whose image is latched to world currents far beyond its control.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nando Alvarez-Perez (b. 1988) investigates the individual's relationship to the vast territory of history. He received a BA in Film studies from CUNY Hunter in 2011 and a MFA from SFAI in 2014. Alvarez-Perez has exhibited at Lydian Stater Gallery, NY, NY, Buffalo Central Terminal, Buffalo, NY, Interface Gallery, Oakland, CA, Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburgh, PA, Untitled Art Fair, San Francisco, CA, and Material Art Fair, CDMX, among many others. Alvarez-Perez was a resident of Lightwork, Syracuse, NY in 2022. His practice extends to his work as a founding director of The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art, an art and education non profit that models how culture can sustain communities through focused, practical engagements with contemporary art, and as editor-in-chief of Cornelia, a visual art review published three times a year for the Western New York and Southern Ontario region. He is a visiting professor at Alfred University, living and working in Buffalo, NY.
